There's a lot of confusion out there over what the 5 types of hauntings are and what they mean. Let's start with the most common type and work our way down...
1. RESIDUAL
With a residual type haunting there are no entities present. Some intense events, over time, become imprinted on a home, land or even objects. Think of a residual haunting as an imprint in time that replays itself over & over again. Since no intelligent entities are actually present, nothing can interact with you nor hurt you. All & all, probably the type of haunting you'd choose if you had to have one!
2. INTELLIGENT
This one is exactly like it sounds. An intelligent haunt is where an entity is aware of itself & is actively trying to communicate. Remember that we are all human & all have our own personality traits, so if one was a generally nice person alive, they're probably the same as a ghost. On the flip side if one is a jerk or a jokester alive, they probably still are now that they're dead. With this type of haunting I always present it from their side to our clients. Think of a ghost as a person, just like you or I, but without a body. I don't know about you, but if I kept trying and trying to get someone to hear me, I'd eventually throw something at them too!
The good thing about intelligent hauntings is the fact that you can, in most cases, reason with the entities. This allows both to coexist in peace.
3. DEMONIC
Unfortunately non-human malicious entities (aka demonic) do exist, though they are rare. Differentiating between an intelligent haunting and a demonic haunting in its early stages is difficult if you do not know what your looking at. This designation needs to be reached by an experienced paranormal team.
A demonic haunting is broken down into five stages; invitation, infestation, oppression, possession, and death. The invitation can be made many ways, such as messing around with things like Ouija boards or seances without the proper protection, or messing with any of the darker arts. Those are just a few of the ways a demonic entity can gain access to you, your home or even into an object such as a doll, piano, jewelry, etc. Next comes infestation, which in many ways can imitate an intelligent haunting to the untrained eye. Oppression is where things become scary and people begin to be attacked with things such as being scratched, hit, bruised, draged, pushed, and so on. By this point the demonic entity has a strong foothold. Next we move onto possession, which is exactly what it sounds like. One should note that this does not have to be a person, but can be land, a house/building, or an object. A demonic entities ultimate design is to cause death if you allow it to move into possession.
If you believe you have this type of haunting, please seek out help as soon as possible!
4. POLTERGEIST
Probably the most misunderstood type of haunting, poltergeist activity does not come from a ghost, but rather from a human agent. Generally caused subconsciously by children with abilities during puberty, energy from their brains mixes with natural energy waves and cause objects to move. For a more informative description, look into Dr. William Roll's research into poltergeist phenomenon.
5. ELEMENTALS
Even less likely to run into is an elemental entity. These are, essentially, nature spirits attached to the four elements; fire, air, water, earth. They are not considered malicious necessarily, it's more like they are ambivalent towards humans, but that ambivalence can lead to injury or even death. Forests are known for elemental activity.
